Recognize – Protect

The Recognize – Protect initiative was launched by ELIZA – Society Against Child Abuse, in strategic partnership with Piraeus, and is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports. The action began in 2023 and continues to raise awareness and protect children at risk of neglect and/or abuse by training the country’s preschool teachers.

The programme consists of two components:

Phase 1: Extensive Pilot – Research Phase

Needs assessment of 10% of all preschool teachers in public preschools nationwide
Development of an educational programme
Digitization of educational resources to ensure programme sustainability
A 15-hour training session for the preschool teachers who participated in the survey
Assessment of acquired knowledge

Phase 2: Synchronous and asynchronous training

Training for all interested preschool teachers nationwide, consisting of 12 hours of asynchronous and 3 hours of synchronous instruction.

Programme objectives

Child protection

Protection of children who have suffered or are at risk of suffering neglect and/or abuse.

The role of preschool teachers

Strengthening the role of preschool teachers as the first point of contact with children and their families.

Identifying incidents

Training in identifying incidents involving suspected neglect and/or abuse.

Immediate intervention

Acquisition of skills for immediate and effective response to such incidents.

National scope

National-level participation of all preschool educators.

Academic integration

Incorporation of the topic into university curricula of Preschool Education.
