Preserving Historical Memory

Protecting and promoting cultural heritage, ensuring the continuity of historical identity and the transfer of knowledge to future generations.

Piraeus actively participates in commemorative events that honour Greek history, contributing to the preservation of the country’s historical memory.

To mark the Bicentennial of the 1821 Revolution, Piraeus supported a series of initiatives encompassing academic research, culture and arts, highlighting the Revolution’s role in the shaping of the modern Greek state. Initiatives such as historical reenactments, exhibits from archival collections, and documentary screenings provided the public with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of modern Greek history.   commemorative events of Piraeus were held in collaboration with distinguished institutions, renowned academics and prominent artists. All commemorative events were digitized and made accessible to the Greek diaspora, creating a lasting cultural for future generations. Detailed information on Piraeus’ activities commemorating the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution can be found at the link below:

eleftheroi (in Greek) – Commemorative events 1821 -2021

To assess the impact of the initiatives implemented to honour the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, Piraeus applied the International Standard for Social Return on Investment (SROI). SROI is a social performance indicator used to measure the value created by Corporate Social Responsibility programmes for society, economy and environment. This assessment was commissioned and carried out by the Centre for Sustainability (CSE). The resulting social return on investment (SROI) ratio is 3.2:1, based on the international SROI methodology. It is estimated that for every €1 invested in Piraeus’ commemorative actions, the value created for society is equivalent to €3.2.

Piraeus commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne on the exchange of populations (1923) with initiatives that highlighted the significance of this tragedy in Greece’s collective historical memory. By supporting exhibitions, lectures, and research programmes, Piraeus contributed to the discovery of new historical data and the understanding of the impact of the Asia Minor Catastrophe on the shaping of modern Greek society and identity.

Through its commemorative actions, Piraeus reinforces the value of historical research and helps in connecting present-day generations with history and educating them about it.
