Energy saving

Select low energy mode and browse with a smaller environmental footprint.

A sustainable concept for a better future.

Piraeus Bank has developed and executed comprehensive accessibility and sustainability strategies across its services, with the objective of creating a better, sustainable future for all. The "Green Mode" feature on piraeusbank.gr is an integral component of our broader sustainability initiatives. It enables our users to navigate the site with comparatively lower energy consumption, without losing any of the functionality and information of the "basic" version.
Pages in "green mode" have a limited color palette and minimal use of images, graphics, and videos. Consequently, their size in KB is significantly reduced, resulting in comparatively lower energy consumption during navigation. This version incorporates all the established best practices and protocols that guarantee accessibility and reduce energy consumption in all our digital services.

Information

The percentage reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the implementation of  Piraeus Bank Energy Saving Button has been estimated using the Sustainable Web Design Framework.
The Sustainable Web Design Framework is a publicly available methodology developed to quantify the carbon impact of digital products. The framework considers both operational and embodied (GHG) emissions associated with websites, originating from three primary sources:

  • data centers
  • networks and
  • user devices.

The analysis regards comparing the average GHG emissions of the 10 most viewed pages on the Piraeus Bank website in Normal Mode against those in Energy Saving Mode.

Information
The emissions calculation is the sum of both operational and embodied emissions from data centers, networks, and user devices. Operational emissions are attributed to the use of the devices, whilst embodied emissions to the production of the devices in a segment and both depend on the size of data transferred, and thus required energy, as well as the carbon intensity of the electricity grid each infrastructure/segment is located in.
Operational and embodied emissions are adjusted to capture visitor behavior by incorporating the New Visitor Ratio and the Data Cache Ratio, which help determine the actual volume of data transferred during website visits. For instance, returning visitors retrieve portions of the website data from their browser’s cache memory, which decreases the data reloaded from the server, thus reducing associated emissions from data centers.
Operational emissions
  • Data Center electricity emissions were calculated using the Netherlands grid emission factor, as the main server is hosted there.
  • Network emissions were estimated using a global average due to the cross-border nature of internet infrastructure.
  • User device electricity emissions were calculated using the Greece grid emission factor, reflecting the primary user base.

Embodied emissions
  • A global average emission factor was applied across all three categories (data centers, networks, user devices), following the methodology’s guidance.

Questions and answers

What is the distinction between green mode and dark mode?

Green mode is a comprehensive design strategy that aims to minimize a website's energy consumption. Among its notable features are a streamlined design and the restriction of energy-consuming functionalities. Dark mode is a feature offered by browsers that aims to improve the user experience in dark environments and, secondarily, to conserve energy by reducing screen brightness requirements.

Apart from reducing energy consumption, what other benefits does green mode offer?

The limited use of colors, images, videos, and simplification of code on pages further improves their accessibility. Additionally, the loading speed of pages is enhanced, as only the necessary information is transferred. What is "web sustainability"?

What is web sustainability?

Web sustainability encompasses a broader scope than mere energy savings. It refers to an overall approach to creating digital services that prioritizes environmental protection and accessibility for all groups. Piraeus Bank implements a range of accessibility strategies across all its services, with the objective of achieving a sustainable future for all.

What is the digital energy footprint?

It is important to note that every transaction, search, or consumption of content on the internet requires energy. With over 5 billion users, the energy footprint of the internet is now significant. In light of these developments, organizations and businesses are redesigning their services with a focus on sustainable practices in technology infrastructure and design.
