Piraeus has developed an integrated environmental strategy, recognizing its important responsibility in addressing climate change and shaping a sustainable future. The Bank has a long history of supporting sustainable development, in accordance with the United Nations Principles of Responsible Banking, which it co-formulated with a small group of UNEP FI member banks in 2019. Through specific initiatives and financing solutions, Piraeus aims to reduce the ecological footprint of the businesses it finances, investing at the same time in green technologies and renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the Bank promotes a sustainable development model by supporting businesses that focus on the circular economy and low carbon emissions, thus enhancing their positive impact on society and the environment.
Piraeus’ assistance to local communities affected by natural disasters, such as fires and floods, is particularly important. In recent years, the Bank has stood by those affected in areas such as Euboea, Parnitha, Evros, Thessaly, and Penteli, offering financial support, direct assistance, and also by contributing to the reconstruction process. Through specific relief programmes and its cooperation with public institutions and organizations, Piraeus contributes to the relief of local communities, as well as to the restoration and regeneration of the damaged natural environment.
Moreover, Piraeus takes the lead in awareness-raising activities aimed at protecting the environment, seeking to build environmental consciousness from an early age. In collaboration with educational institutions, Piraeus supports initiatives such as the educational campaign Greening Education Partnership, which is part of the international Eco-Schools programme run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which encourages students to develop eco-consciousness and embrace environmentally friendly practices. Through hands-on activities, workshops, and informative events, students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to become responsible citizens of tomorrow, ensuring the protection of the natural world.
